What Is ENMAX?

ENMAX is a regulated utility serving approximately 600,000 customers in Calgary and Southern Alberta, including Airdrie, Cochrane, and surrounding areas. ENMAX generates, transmits, and distributes electricity and is regulated by the Alberta Utilities Commission (AUC).

ENMAX has embraced distributed solar generation through its net metering program, which has seen steady growth among residential and small commercial customers. The utility's renewable energy strategy includes supporting customer-owned solar as part of Alberta's clean energy transition.

ENMAX Electricity Rates (2026)

Standard Residential Rate

Energy Charge~13.0–14.5¢/kWh
Distribution Charge~2.8–3.5¢/kWh
Transmission Charge~0.8–1.2¢/kWh

Rates vary by transmission zone and are subject to AUC approval. Verify current rates at enmax.com.

RoLR Credit Rate (Net Metering Export)

The Rider on Loss and Risk (RoLR) is ENMAX's rate for crediting your solar exports:

~1.5–2.5¢/kWh

RoLR is intentionally lower than retail to reflect avoided distribution losses and ENMAX's wholesale costs. Right-size your system to minimize export and maximize self-consumption.

Budget Billing Plan

ENMAX offers levelized monthly billing based on your average annual consumption. Solar reduces your billed amount; credits offset future consumption.

ENMAX Net Metering Program

How Credits Work

  • • Solar generation tracked by bidirectional smart meter
  • • Export credits valued at RoLR rate (~1.5–2.5¢/kWh)
  • • Credits roll forward month-to-month
  • • Unused credits at year-end are forfeited (no cash payment)
  • • System capacity up to 100 kW

Right-Sizing Your System

Most Calgary homes consume 12,000–15,000 kWh/year. A 10–12 kW system (solar capacity) will approximate annual consumption at ~1,100–1,200 kWh/kW production. This maximizes credit utilization and minimizes forfeiture.

Battery Storage & Load Shifting

Pair battery storage with solar to capture excess generation and discharge during evening peak hours, further improving economics. Smart thermostats, EV charging during daylight, and pool pumps also optimize self-consumption.

Key Limitation: No Cash Payment

Unlike some utilities that pay cash for surplus solar exports, ENMAX's net metering program does not provide cash buyback. Credits expire at year-end. This makes right-sizing critical.

Solar Potential in Southern Alberta

Southern Alberta, including Calgary, has excellent solar irradiance due to high sunshine hours and low cloud cover. Calgary ranks among Canada's sunniest major cities.

How to Apply for ENMAX Net Metering

ENMAX applications are typically submitted through your solar installer or directly via ENMAX's online portal.

1

Initial Inquiry

Contact ENMAX or your solar installer to confirm eligibility and get ENMAX pre-approval for your proposed system size.

2

System Design

Work with your installer to design a system sized to your annual consumption (~12,000–15,000 kWh for typical Calgary home). Obtain equipment specs, single-line diagram, and interconnection details.

3

Gather Documentation

Collect ENMAX account number, recent bills, property details, system specifications, and inverter/PV datasheets.

4

Submit Net Metering Application

Submit application via ENMAX online portal or through your installer. Include system design, equipment certifications, and site plan.

5

ENMAX Engineering Review

ENMAX performs technical review to assess grid impact, interconnection feasibility, and required upgrades (typically 4–6 weeks).

6

Interconnection Agreement

Once approved, sign the standardized interconnection and net metering agreement with ENMAX.

7

Bidirectional Meter Installation

ENMAX installs or replaces your meter with a bidirectional smart meter capable of tracking both consumption and export.

8

Final Inspection & Energization

Your installer completes final inspections; system is commissioned. Credits begin accruing on your ENMAX account immediately.

9

Monitor Credits

Track your net metering credits on your monthly ENMAX bill. Right-size your system to maximize self-consumption and credit utilization.

10

Annual Review

Review annual production vs. consumption. Adjust usage patterns (EV charging, pool pumps, smart thermostats) to optimize credit allocation.

No Cash Payment for Excess Credits

ENMAX does not pay cash for surplus net metering credits. Right-size your system to your annual consumption to avoid forfeiture of credits at year-end.

Federal & Provincial Incentives

Canada Greener Homes Loan

0% interest, up to $40K for energy retrofits including solar installation.

Federal 30% Investment Tax Credit (ITC)

30% tax credit on eligible clean technology equipment (verify residential eligibility).

Alberta Electricity Rebate

Alberta provides a rebate on electricity bills for certain energy efficiency and renewable generation upgrades.
