Alberta Solar Calculator
Built around Alberta micro-generation net billing, credit carry-forward rules (up to 12 months), and official solar resource references.
Solar savings in Alberta depend on three things: how much electricity you use, how much solar your roof can produce, and how your retailer credits exported power under net billing (micro-generation). This calculator estimates annual production (kWh), recommended system size, cost range, payback, and CO₂ savings—then explains what the numbers mean in Alberta so you don't get misled by "bill to $0" claims.
What you'll get in 60 seconds:
- ✓Estimated annual solar production (kWh/year) using Alberta-ready assumptions and an "edit assumptions" drawer (transparent math).
- ✓Recommended system size (kW) to offset a target portion of your annual usage (default 80%).
- ✓Cost range + simple payback with adjustable $/W, self-consumption %, and export credit rate.
- ✓Alberta net billing clarity: energy-charge savings vs. charges solar usually cannot erase.
- ✓Next steps that fit your city: installer quote + financing path (CEIP where available).

How Solar Credits Work in Alberta (Net Billing, Not Net Metering)
Plain-Language Explanation
In Alberta, micro-generation uses net billing—your imported and exported electricity are netted over the billing period to calculate a charge or credit. Credits can be carried forward up to 12 months, and service providers must settle unused credits at least once per calendar year (payment, offset, or both). Importantly, credits apply to electricity charges—not other bill items.
Reality Check: Delivery Charges
Even with solar, many delivery costs are largely fixed, so your total bill often won't drop to $0. Solar most directly reduces the energy portion and may create export credits depending on your usage and export rate.
Default Electricity Rate Reference (Edit Anytime)
If you don't know your energy rate, we can use a reference default for Alberta's Rate of Last Resort (RoLR) as a starting point. RoLR is a fixed regulated-rate product set for two-year terms and varies by area/provider (example: 12.02¢/kWh in areas served by Direct Energy Regulated Services for Jan 1, 2025 to Dec 31, 2026). This is energy-only and does not include delivery/billing charges.
Want the most accurate estimate? Enter your kWh/month from your bill (or upload it if your flow supports that).
Alberta Solar Incentives & Financing (Updated for 2026)
Federal Programs Status (Important)
The Canada Greener Homes Loan is closed to new applications (October 1, 2025 was the last day to apply). The Canada Greener Homes Grant is also closed to new applicants, with final deadlines for existing participants in 2025. Always verify current programs before planning your purchase.
Municipal Financing (CEIP / PACE-style, Where Available)
Some Alberta municipalities offer Clean Energy Improvement Program (CEIP) financing that can fund up to 100% of eligible project costs with repayment through your property tax bill, with terms varying by municipality.
Calgary CEIP
Interest Rate: 3.75%
Incentive: Up to 10% off completed projects (availability limited)
Edmonton CEIP
Interest Rate: 6.00%
Terms: Up to 20 years via property tax, depending on upgrade life
Where Our Alberta Solar Production Estimates Come From
We use a transparent production model (tilt/orientation/shading/losses), and we recommend validating final production with installer-grade modeling. For official Canada-wide solar resource references, Natural Resources Canada provides PV potential mapping estimates (kWh/kWp) on ~2 km grid resolution across Canada with multiple orientations and tilts.
Estimated CO₂ Savings (Editable Assumption)
If you choose to view emissions savings, we start with Alberta's reported grid emissions intensity of ~470 g CO₂e/kWh (2023, preliminary). Because grid intensity changes over time, you can adjust this factor in advanced settings.
Ready for a Precise Design and Quote?
A calculator estimate is a strong start—but a real quote confirms:
- •Roof layout and shading from site data
- •Equipment selection (panels, inverters, racking)
- •Electrical constraints and interconnection requirements
- •A production model tailored to your property and retailer
By submitting, you agree to be contacted about your solar quote. We never sell your information.
